Current adopted Building Codes, as of December 17, 2019
Per the City's Building Code: "No person shall begin work without a valid building permit. It is unlawful for anyone to erect, construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, improve, remove, convert, demolish, equip, use, occupy or maintain any building or land or cause or permit the same to be done."
Once the building permit has been issued, inspections can be scheduled. After all inspections are completed a Certificate of Occupancy will be issued as the final step in the process.
Once a permit is issued inspections are required for the different disciplines of the construction. All work must be inspected prior to covering and moving on to the next step. When calling for inspections, please plan on a 24-hour response time from our field inspectors. All calls for inspections that are received prior to 4 p.m. will be scheduled for inspection the next business day.
When a complaint is made to our division, the caller may choose to leave their name only if they wish. All calls are considered confidential and no personal information is needed to make a complaint. Inoperable vehicles, accumulation of litter, overgrown trees and shrubs, and construction or remodeling without a proper building permit are the most common violations within the City.
Once the complaint is received, an inspection is conducted to verify that a code violation does exist; the inspector will make an effort to contact the owner of the property where the violation has occurred to correct the problem. A Notice of Violation will be issued and the property owner will have a determined time period to correct the issue(s). If the property has not come into compliance at the end of the time period, a citation will be issued.
