Currently, the Police Department does not have any Somerton Police Officers assigned to local schools; however, we continue to visit each site regularly and remain available for any special events or requests.
SRO HISTORY
The School Resource Officer program is a nationally accepted initiative that places a law enforcement officer within the educational environment. These officers serve multiple functions focused on prevention. In addition to being a highly visible law enforcement presence, the School Resource Officer acts as a resource for students, parents, teachers, and school administration regarding law-related issues. Working closely with school principals, the School Resource Officer helps address and find solutions to the challenges faced by today’s school-aged children.
1995 – The Somerton Police Department, in partnership with Somerton School District #11, began sponsoring a local School Resource Officer; and assigned this officer to the Somerton Middle School.
2023 – The program provided three officers to the Somerton School District. These officers were assigned to all local elementary schools within the Somerton city limits throughout the school year. Also in August 2023, the Somerton Police Department placed one School Resource Officer at Somerton High School through a collaborative effort between the Yuma Union High School District and the City of Somerton.
